Learning to Ride a Motorcycle in Canggu

November 27, 2017

Canggu (a district of Bali) has a lot going for it. Private villas, trendy coffee shops, local designer brands, etc. But my favorite aspect to Canggu? Brunch. Its brunch game is strong.

This morning I woke up to a Facebook message from my hostel friend Tama asking, “wanna get breakfast?”

Um, yes. Always. I feel offended that this is even a question.

So we headed over to this brunch hot spot called Crate Cafe, which just captures the essence of Bali so well. It’s chill, social, healthy, delicious. It’s all of the things that I love about Bali.

And though they had wonderful healthy options, I went with bacon. And french toast and scrambled eggs. But it was the bacon that sold it for me.

After stuffing my face and successfully developing a food baby, I went back to the hostel to lay on my bed like a beached whale and video chat my brother and his girlfriend. They’ll be celebrating Thanksgiving this week, and it’s the first time I truly feel like I’m missing out since traveling.

After a bit of a rest, Tama and I headed out on an adventure of epic proportions. I was going to learn how to ride a motorcycle. Oh yeah.

Tama rides motorcycles back home, and so I asked him if he’d teach me. I really don’t have any intention of riding on the real roads of Bali – I just wanted to learn for the sake of learning. We went to a back road, and he began explaining the clutch. When I jumped on, I was overwhelmed by how heavy the bike was. Of all of the thoughts going through my brain, weight never crossed my mind.

I would proudly like to state that I took off for the first time without stalling. However, I’m a very timid driver. It’s a big piece of machinery, and I respect the power. After about 15 minutes, I was able to drive up and down the empty streets a bit more relaxed.

But regardless, safety must always come first. The motorcycle is just too heavy and complicated for me to feel comfortable while driving. So later that afternoon, I rented a scooter for the rest of my stay in Canggu.

But I really loved riding the motorcycle.
